United States: ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI - Final (SA)

Macro

2026-05-05

Description

The U.S. ISM Non-Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (NMI) is compiled and published by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). This index is derived from monthly surveys of over 400 purchasing managers in non-manufacturing industries. An NMI reading above 50 indicates expansion in the non-manufacturing sector, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction. It is a key indicator of the health of the US services sector and other non-manufacturing industries.

The NMI is calculated from four equally weighted components: Business Activity, New Orders, Employment, and Supplier Deliveries.

This data is released at 10:00 AM (EST) on the third business day of each month, providing insights into the previous month's non-manufacturing activities.

AI Data Insight

The newly released US Q2 2026 ISM Services PMI is 53.6, retreating slightly from the previous Q1 reading of 54.0, and coming in slightly below market expectations. Although the overall indicator remains in expansion territory, a sharp decline in new orders and two consecutive months of contraction in the employment index highlight that high inflation pressure is cooling economic momentum. With geopolitical conflicts driving up oil prices and operating costs, the risk of "stagflation" in the short to medium term is climbing, and market expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts will face a severe test.
