China: Total Retail Sales of Consumer Goods (YoY) - Excluding Vehicles

Macro

2026-05-18

Description

China Total Retail Sales of Consumer Goods (except automobiles) is released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This indicator mainly measures the total sales of social consumer goods excluding automobiles during a period. By excluding automobile projects with high volatility, we can observe more core commodity consumption trends. Higher sales indicate stronger consumer confidence and economic health, while lower numbers may indicate a weaker economy.

Note: Retail sales of consumer refers to the amount of non-production, non-business physical goods sold directly by enterprises to individuals and social groups through transactions, as well as the amount of income obtained from providing catering services.

China's year-on-year growth rate of total retail sales of consumer goods excluding autos for 2026-04-01 (Q2 2026) dropped sharply to 1.8% from the previous 2026-03-01 (Q1 2026) figure of 3.2%. Overall retail sales edged up by merely 0.2%, falling far short of the market expectation of 2.0%. Under the dual blow of a sluggish auto market and real estate downturn, durable goods consumption plummeted. Stronger fiscal stimulus and the implementation of trade-in policies are urgently needed in the future to boost domestic demand.
