The Hang Seng Index (HSI) is compiled and published by Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited. It is a market capitalization-weighted index that tracks the performance of the largest and most liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The HSI serves as a primary indicator of the overall market performance in Hong Kong and is often used to gauge the economic health of Hong Kong's economy. A higher index value indicates better market performance, while a lower value suggests poorer performance.
The HSI is calculated using a free-float market capitalization weighting method. It consists of 50 constituent stocks, which are selected based on their market capitalization, turnover, and representation of the market. The index is reviewed quarterly to ensure it accurately reflects the market.
The Hang Seng Index is updated in real-time during trading hours of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Official closing values are published at the end of each trading day.
