From January to May 2026, the cumulative residential power consumption in urban and rural areas of China reached 606.5 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%. This represents a significant expansion in growth compared to the previous cumulative figure of 497.6 billion kWh (a YoY increase of 3.9%) for January to April. In May alone, the year-on-year growth rate of residential power consumption surged to 7.5%, primarily driven by the early arrival of extreme high temperatures and the increased penetration rate of new energy vehicles. The strong performance of the overall power consumption data not only reflects the resilience of rigid residential electricity demand but also highlights the structural changes brought about by AI computing power and green energy transition.
