Description
The Tankan Survey in Japan is published by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). This survey measures the economic confidence of approximately 10,000 manufacturing and non-manufacturing enterprises with a capital of over 20 million yen. Among these, large enterprises are defined as those with a capital of over 1 billion yen, including around 900 large manufacturing companies. When the index is above 0, it indicates optimism among businesses regarding economic conditions; when below 0, it indicates pessimism. This index is a crucial indicator of business trends in Japan and influences BOJ’s monetary policy.
The Tankan Survey includes quantitative items such as sales revenue, capital investment, and employment numbers, as well as subjective judgment items. The industry judgment index is calculated by subtracting the percentage of “Favorable” responses from the percentage of “Favorable” responses.
This data is released quarterly in April, July, October, and December.
