Japan: Tankan Survey - Large Non-Manufacturing Enterprises Confident Index

Macro

Description

The Tankan Survey, published by the Bank of Japan (BOJ), measures the confidence levels of about 10,000 manufacturing and non-manufacturing enterprises with a capital of over 20 million yen. Large enterprises are those with a capital exceeding 1 billion yen, including around 800 large non-manufacturing firms. An index above 0 indicates optimism, while below 0 indicates pessimism. This indicator is crucial for assessing business trends in Japan and influencing BOJ's monetary policy.

The Tankan Survey includes quantitative items such as sales revenue, capital investment, and employment numbers, as well as subjective judgment items. The industry judgment index is calculated by subtracting the percentage of “Favorable” responses from the percentage of “Favorable” responses.

This data is released quarterly in April, July, October, and December.
